“Commit to Quit” is the 2021 theme for World Smokefree Day. Hāpai Te Hauora and Auckland Council partnered up to put on three events throughout Tamaki Makaurau. Hāpai Te Hauora commissioned the amazing Maree Webster for a script, this became “People and Things”.

People and Things is set during the COVID-19 Lockdown and is about a family facing the challenges of a world that has essentially shut down. It’s how the various relationships in a family are interconnected and affected by the outside world, but primarily about how someone is trying to quit smoking but is so stressed out they cannot kick the habit.

We had over 60 members of the community pack into Te Oro for an awesome night of live music, delicious food, and a production that was filled with witty one-liners, awkward moments, harsh truths, and comedy that everyone could relate to.

People and Things lines up perfectly with our Kaupapa at the HEART movement because it’s about the various dynamics between different family members, and how to strained relationships can be made healthy again. It just takes time and effort to rebuild and nurture healthy relationships, and healthy families makes for healthy communities.
