What Peter enjoys about HEART is that it is community, and it’s whānau. He acknowledges sitting in a space where you can see the change and growth in the community. Peters shares his respect to the hope navigators of the community, who continue to reach out and give hope. Hope navigators really do make a difference in the community. M.E.S.S is about giving and sharing knowledge. Peter shares his thoughts on how funding and resources should go to the community. He believes that the community has the capacity to do what it needs to do if given the right resources for it.

Fun fact about Peter: He loves V8’s, classics, and racing. Father of two, and enjoys watching cartoons with his tamariki.

“We need to continue to develop the capacity of our communities to self-heal, in whatever way or shape that could be. If you’re hurting or you’re struggling with mental health, addictions, trauma.. that YES, it can be hard to access help, but find the right people, keep asking, keep trying. There’s plenty of us out there that will actually lead you to the right places. Don’t do it in isolation or alone. We’re here to help!” - Peter Thorburn
