Roi Boyd

Roi started her involvement with HEART in August 2017 when she was looking for some way to give back to the community. She loves people talking, connecting, helping and sharing. The kauapa around building healthy relationships is close to her heart because as she grew up around violence. It was the norm in the community in those days. A lot of the violence happened when the men consumed alcohol, and the mums and children got beaten up for no reason at all. She knows the hardship of having many children to feed and few financial resources. Her experiences help her to understand people who are going through violence and she enjoys being there for them.

The HEART Movement has provided Roi an opportunity for sharing stories and hearing stories of change, trauma and struggle. Roi says, “involvement with HEART and attending the training and conversation spaces has grown my understanding that there is a different way. Having the opportunity to talk about issues and acknowledging that there is a problem that needs to be talked about is what I have enjoyed the most in my involvement with HEART. My message to family is always that there is help and hope out there. The HEART work has given me the chance and opportunity to reach out to families. There is a big need for the work of the HEART to be shared. I don’t think we have reached everyone who really needs it yet. There are still many people out there in the community that really need support and connections to change the realities of their lives. I want to continue to work with other community leaders and volunteers to do that.”
