Over lockdown, The HEART Movement offered free community training workshops online through Zoom. Peter Thorburn from Meth Education Support and Services Ltd facilitated these workshops on topics that were chosen by the HEART network from a poll we took at the end of 2019. The first workshop was on Self-Care - an important topic at the beginning of Lockdown that steered the way in a positive direction for many people who attended. The other topics for the training workshops were Managing Alcohol & Other Drugs, How to Help Others & Ourselves, Motivational Interviewing, Methamphetamine Harm, Non-Violence crisis intervention (communication de-escalation), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

By the second training workshop, we reached the maximum of participants of 100 people! This continued to be the case for the rest of the training workshops with many of the participants coming back to attend more or all of the remaining online training workshops over the Lockdown period. Participants ranged from social workers, family workers, community workers, community people, parents and healthcare professionals. The HEART coordinator Ren Joe did an amazing job of holding the space and making sure the technology worked seamlessly. For each training workshop Ren set the tone with an invitation of karakia and gave an overview of The HEART Movement for those who were not familiar.

Our facilitator for these workshops was Peter Thorburn who has a great reputation for his knowledge, real life experience and high quality course content. HEART had great feedback on each workshop and those training workshops that were recorded have had over 1.6k views on the HEART Facebook page. Peter also provided content that was available to download through the HEART website that enriched the learning and added to the kete of resources for many participants.

With lockdown now lifted the training workshops have now returned to Te Waipuna Puawai in Ellerslie, please see our Facebook events page for upcoming training workshops. We would like to thank everyone who attended these online workshops for your commitment to learning about issues that matter to our communities.
