Maramataka Workshop
Maramataka is the turning of the moon because the moon has a different phase every day. It’s the natural rhythms our ancestors had when living in harmony with nature. It’s when they knew when to fish, plant, harvest, and gather as whanau. Since two thirds of the world is covered in water and the moon dictates the tides, it would only make sense that humans are also affected as our bodies are made up of 70% water.
Modern lifestyles often work against nature, the grind can get ruthless at times. We need to take time out to unwind and clear the mind. Constantly overworking ourselves can lead to health problems later in life. Maramataka teaches us that it’s completely fine to take time out to rest, re-evaluate, meditate, and be still.
On the 14th of July at Faith Family Connect, Mihi Tibble from Tuhi Stationery shared with us her knowledge on Maramataka. We had about 30 community members join us and learn how we can better live in harmony with nature in this modern world.
Having a healthy relationship with nature can only have a knock-on effect in how we interact with people. Maramataka encourages us to not only when work hard, but to check-in with whanau, and take time out for ourselves.
