Alcohol Talk in Tāmaki II
Our focus around working on alcohol harm minimization continues, and this month we hosted some great conversations at our Masculine Norms and Alcohol Harm Training with Peter Thorburn. The training started initially with a very small group of people, but we were soon joined by a group of men from the community.
We spent some time local discussing alcohol advertisements and the toxic representation of masculinity. There was a lot of conversation around what it means to be a man and how norms and expectations around that are changing. There was an agreement that alcohol drinking is still portrayed as a symbol of manliness, and there is a lot of sports advertisement focused on alcohol, celebration, and victory.
