HEART Collective - Community Action Fund

Small grants between $250 dollars to $2500 dollars are available to Change Agents, individuals or local organisations that are members and/or actively involved in the HEART Movement.

Successful projects will have a focus on building healthy relationships and/or preventing family violence, and align to one of the more specific outcomes below.

Application Process

Applications can be made to the HEART Collective in the way that best suits the applicant. This could be written, verbally, create a small video or presentation. The application should simply cover the questions,

Who? What? Where? When? How?

  • Who is the group/organisation/individual that is applying for funding?

  • What is the activity/event/project?

  • Who is the target audience/group for the project/event/activity?

  • Where will this take place?

  • When will this take place?

  • How do you see it connecting to HEART values?

For applications over $500, budgets must be submitted in written format.

Decision Process

All funding requests are submitted to the Leader for Change - preferably at least 2 months in advance of project initiation. Decisions could take up to two months to come through due to meeting times. Contact the Leader for Change for meeting dates.

Decisions are made at HEART Collective meetings (which meets bi-monthly) and applicants will be notified soon after, by the Leader for Change.

Funding Criteria

  • Preference will be provided to non-registered organisations or informal community or neighbourhood groups.

  • The group or its members have an already existing relationship with the HEART Movement.

  • They are committed to learning and have attended HEART training and understand and align with our way of working.

  • Successful applicants agree to send a photo and a quick summary of their project after its completion - and/or a conversation with the Leader for Change (dependent on size of the grant).

  • Funding will not be used for alcohol.

What outcome(s) will the project meet?

The outcomes that the projects will align to one of the following HEART Movement outcomes.

  • Increased personal relevance

People face the impact of family violence on themselves, their families and the community, and the benefits of developing healthy relationships for families and the wider community.

  • Healthy relationships knowledge

Community members start to understand what healthy relationships sound, look and feel like and are building skills to help develop and maintain them within their families and community.

  • Community knowledge of support

Community members know about local support and services and their effectiveness. Effective support and services are accessible to everyone in the community.

  • Fostering community cohesion and conversation

People start to reach out and talk to others about safe family environments, healthy relationships and how to build that within their own families and communities. They ask for support and provide support to others.

  • Healthy relationships visible

A diverse range of local couples and families with healthy relationships are visible and share their stories in the community.

Examples of Successful Projects

A list of the most current successful applications are on our HEART Collective page. Blogs have been written on the following successful projects.

  • Sanctuary Dinners in Glen Innes - Change Agent Lyalle who is an accomplished chef set up delicious free dinners for the Tāmaki community

  • FatherHood Videos - After becoming a father for the first time, Change Agent Tyrone went on a mission to connect with other local dads  to find out their thoughts, insights and aspirations on fatherhood. This project was in collaboration with It’s Ok To Say No Campaign.

  • Health and Fitness Classes with Leah - Taking a holistic approach to health and well-being Change Agent Leah approached HEART to offer health and fitness classes as part of our HEART spaces. They started online during Covid-19 restrictions and will continue at Te Whare Piringa. This project is supported by Tāmaki Regeneration Company.

  • NZSL Classes - Change Agent Tui has a passion for NZSL and brought that to us over the lockdown period of COVID-19. Our classes had huge interest (65 on the waiting list!) so in conjunction with Merge NZ we ran two blocks. Momentum in the HEART NZSL Learning Community continues with Tui holding practice sessions until the group secures funding for future classes.
